"Be patient - take your time now or the horse
will make you take the time later"
Horses have always been a part of the Young's lives. Patience was
the theme emphasized by Henry Young who was a respected polo
horse trainer. Henry was the guiding hand for Jim, his son, throughout his early training career.
Jim Young Quarter horses has been a family operation since 1961.
In the beginning, Jim trained and Walta with the children Bill and
"Bootsie" fed, watered, held horses, and cheered Dad on.
In time, Bill and "Bootsie" began showing in the halter and
performance Youth classes. Behind the Scene was Mom (Walta)
keeping records, entering the classes, and cheering the team on.
Walta rode the horses after the performances to cool them before
stalling and feeding.
Together, AQHA champions were created along with numerous
Register Of Merits in Halter and Performance. The Young's
qualified and attended several World Shows. Walta qualified for
the Amateur Halter and Jim in the Opening Reining.
Jim had the Appaloosa Reserve World Champion Calf Roping
Horse in 1965.
Bill and "Bootsie" both participated in high school rodeos.
" Bootsie" qualified for two National Finals in high school and
was the New Mexico High School Rodeo Queen. Bootsie was the
year end winner of the breakaway roping for the New Mexico
Quarter horse Assoc. She also attended the AQHA Youth World
Show in breakaway roping.
Bill won the Youth tie down roping at the New Mexico State Fair
and showed his mare Roosters Girl to 15 straight wins in reining.
Bill had two Youth Register of Merits. Bill teamed up with Jim
exhibiting in open team roping and showed several calf roping
horses contributing to their AQHA championship.
Jim and Walta, now retired, continue to breed
horses with a goal of raising a pretty performance
horse with a good mind.
